U.S. Open Cup: Seattle Sounders FC 3 - 1 Chivas USA, September 1, 2010 (Game Review & Videos)
After finally scoring three goals to end their two-season scoreless streak against Chivas USA, the Sounders play host to head coach Sigi Schmid's former team, the Columbus Crew, in the U.S. Open Cup Final on October 5th at Qwest Field.
In a tough and physical match, Nate Jaqua scored twice and Montero chalked up the other strike in the 3-1 victory over their California rivals. Steve Zakuani, named the Man of the Match, ran circles around the Chivas defense and received credit for two assists.
Game Review
The Good
- Head coach Sigi Schmid gave Blaise Nkufo a rest and inserted Jaqua in his place with outstanding results. With his two goals, the Oregon native may receive strong consideration for a starting role the rest of the year.
- Montero's strike gave him 12 for the year in all competitions. He's on a roll as a playermaker and scorer.
- Steve Zakuani played an outstanding game. He had several scoring opportunities to go along with his assists. Another young player in Schmid's offensive arsenal that makes the Sounders dangerous in their playoff run.
- Super sub Roger Levesque received an assist on his fabulous cross from the right corner flag on Jaqua's stoppage time header.
- Kasey Keller and his defenders gave up one lone goal to Chivas USA. The former EPL goalie needed to make six stops during the match .
The Bad
- Tough to find fault when the Sounders finally scored a goal against a tough Chivas USA side. The all-out effort by Seattle and fatigue could be a factor as Seattle travels to New England for Saturday's matchup versus the Revs.
- Jaqua's impressive play may hurt Nkufo's psyche as he attempts to blend into his new surroundings.
...And The Rest
- The U.S. OPen Cup Final match against Schmid's old team should be intriguing. The veteran coach acknowledged the deep emotional roots he had with Columbus coaches and players.
- Seattle will attempt to secure their second consecutive piece of silverware on October 5th, something no MLS team has ever accomplished.
- Miguel Montano was in the stands and failed again to make the substitute list.
