What are we going to do about these high gas prices?

Listen to Dave Ross Commentary: What are we going to do about these high gas prices?

Oil is over $100 a barrel; there are warnings it could hit $150, which would mean gas prices of $4.25 a gallon by spring, and maybe even $5...and we Americans can't believe it:

gas"It's unbelievable. I thought we were beyond this," said a woman in one news report.

It is unbelievable. But you know what's REALLY unbelievable? That anybody still thinks high gas prices are unbelievable!

I remember it being unbelievable when it broke $1. Then it was unbelievable when it broke $2 a gallon. Then $3 was really unbelievable.

You know what? I'm starting to believe it.

But Dave you say, how can prices be going up when the White House says we're drilling more than ever?

"Oil production in the United States has increased every year this president has been in office," said one report.

It's called the free market, people!

The thing that every Americans love, including this guy:

"It's power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched," said Obama.

And the way it works is, when we save gas, thereby creating a glut of gas, oil companies are free to refine less gas, and to send what's left over to South Africa -- at least according to news articles I've been reading:

"It's unbelievable."

Well, believe it!

So -- what are we going to do about these high gas prices? We are going to unleash a torrent of nasty tweets, like the world has never seen -- and then pay them. Until every middle east sheikdom has a mile-high skyscraper.

If you don't like it, it's a free country, you can go fracking in your backyard and find your own oil -- I hear in some places they can light the faucet on fire and get free hot water on demand.

I'm just relieved that $4 gas is the one scourge in America that appears to have nothing to do with gay marriage. So far anyway.

On May 29, 2011 she issued a statement that commodity speculators were driving up gas prices and she was going to launch an investigation. I am certain she has been spending the last nine months rooting out these unscrupulous speculators. Except, of course, for the time she has spent hanging out with her BFF Elizabeth Warren.

Yes, oil production is up during this administration but you really have to look at the fine print. Oil production is up ONLY because the drilling is being done on private land. In fact, oil production is at some of its lowest in decades on private land/sea. Land that requires a permit (something this administration is very hesitant on giving) in order to begin exploration. So...Dave is probably being a bit disingenuous when he speaks about how much oil is being “produced” from this administration.; . If the administration were smart, they would open up as many permits as possible in order to help drive down the cost of oil. Remember, oil prices are based on futures commodity trading. It is not about how much oil you can pull in the next six months, but what the supply will be in the long term.

Why do you have a problem with the privately owned lands being exploited before the public land is opened to drilling.Face it the oil companies want to go after the easily attained (cheaper higher profit oil) first. When are you going to wake up to the FACT that more drilling does not equate to cheap oil?The Companies are NOT going to flood the market with oil so the price drops they will always release it in small amounts. This has been a mild winter here in the USA so gas should be cheaper then normal because the refinery's can be used to produce gas and not fuel oil.Last week the Dems introduced a Bill that would insure that if the Keystone pipeline was built that the oil would remain in the USA the GOP said no.So if the Keystone was built more refineries would be used for export oil and would drive US prices up because those refineries would not be producing gas for US use.If as you say oil prices are based on commodity trading then the US government should jump in (as a player)and attempt to control it instead of a bunch of Billionaires getting FAT

Is the solution to every issue government? What makes government and the 540 or so people running it more noble and trustworthy than anyone else? I personally find it difficult to put such faith in a group of individuals working in a profession whose job gives them authoritarian type power over everyone. I don’t think there is much nobility in something like that no matter how hard they try and convince you that they are doing it to serve the people. -- And yes, the futures market has a HUGE impact on the price of oil. I get the feeling that no matter what I present that you will always reside in the fact that government is the solution and that anyone associated with oil is out to destroy the “working man.” It becomes difficult to have much of a discussion when those ideas seem so ingrained. -- You should also review the value of the dollar, domestic oil production and regulation. All have a pretty good impact on what you pay at the pump.

If you start being Right I WILL concede that your Right. Why are you NOT willing to put some faith behind people who are elected to office and seem to believe its OK to put your faith in a FOR PROFIT business? What NEW regulations have been put into place during Obama's term of office? I agree the value of the US Dollar has an impact but the Dollar has had no recent change to cause the recent surge in prices. As far as Domestic production goes its UP. I agree that the futures market has an impact also thats why I suggested that the US Government get involved in that futures market. Last ITs time we Nationalized our oil,the assets of a country belong to that country and its citizens,We are the 3rd Largest producer of oil inthe world lets start acting like we are

Used water bottle should do some research rather than quoting Rush Limbaugh. Specifically, google oil production/North Dakota/Montana. Drilling is higher now than in a long time. The oil companies and OPEC will keep the prices up in order to maximize profits, and to exercise political control. (money to Congressmen). The only way the government can effect the price of oil is by releasing reserves. But that really has a minuscule effect. Politicians in this country are crooks, from the top down and on both sides of the isle. The President has very little he can do to control this problem.

If you go to any city or county council meeting it becomes apparent that our leaders are trying to force everyone into buses and trains. While this may be fine for Europe and the East Coast where people are tightly packed and the city businesses centralized, it simply does not work out here where things are spread out. Their transportation infrastructure has included mass transit from an early age. President Obama could take care of this simply by just announcing that we are going to start exploiting our own oil resources via offshore drilling on the West Coast or in the ANWaR. That would drive down oil prices almost immediately. Oh yeah - then there is his refusal to allow a trans-Canada/US pipeline which would also lower the cost.

That Keystone pipeline oil was going to tie up our refineries in Texas and then be shipped abroad. gas prices probably would have risen in the USA because refinery space whould have been used for exported oil. Mass transit is cheaper then building new high ways. Do you understand that lots of oil leases are not even being worked by the oil companies?Guess not

...paying $38,500 per plate at Obama's Wall Street re-election fundraising events...don't expect anything to be done any time soon.

To be fair, these speculators are equal opportunity buyers of favors. But when the question is asked, "What can the President do about speculation?" He's got enough czars that he could do something if he wanted to.

After all, it's simply a outcome of their beloved "free market," right? (Never-mind all the billions in direct and indirect subisidies we provide to Big Oil.)

Furthermore, they love the oil companies! So they should be happy to contribute more to their coffers.

Last time I heard, oil companies made about 10 to 11 cents profit on a gallon of gasoline. Taxes raked in over 50 cents a gallon. So who is reaping obsene profits on oil?

So this is the 'last time you heard' Bill?

Furthermore, "The 10 cent per gallon profit line soon made the jump to Fox's "straight news" program, America's Newsroom, where correspondent Doug McKelway demonstrated his journalistic prowess by reading the statement from ExxonMobil verbatim"

If there is any remaining doubt that you, and the rest of "Fox Nation" must be gymnasts to have your heads inserted in its present location, hopefully this resolves it.

Oil is about $100/barrel right now. Go to your broker today and buy $1000 worth. When oil hits $150/barrel, sell. You've just made $500. If today's gas price is $3.50/gallon and it gets to $5/gallon, the $500 you made on your oil future purchase offsets the difference on about 330 gallons of gas. essentially, for 330 gallons of gas, or about 33 tanks of gas, you're paying todays price, regardless if the gas price gets to $5/gallon or not.
