Sounders go for defense in MLS Superdraft
A College Soccer-News first team All American, Duran is 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, and anchored one of the best back lines in collegiate soccer. The Blue Jays, in fact, set an NCAA record by giving up just 0.20 goals per game.
Duran told ESPN he was "elated to be picked by Seattle. I was out there this summer and loved the program."
Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid spoke briefly with Duran and said simply he was proud to have him.
Seattle already signed former D.C. United and Columbus Crew defender Marc Burch, as well as Swedish first division defensive back Adam Johannson. The Sounders had to replace starters Tyson Wahl and James Riley, who moved to other clubs during the expansion draft.
Duran knows he will fight an uphill battle to earn playing time as a rookie.
"That would be amazing for me," he said. "I'm just out here to work hard, and earn a spot in this league. I know a lot of guys don't make it, but I'll work as hard as I can to get there."
Update: The Sounders have taken forward Babayele Sodade from Alabama-Birmingham with the 34th pick.
